Seasonal Gardening in Calgary

The season are what defines a Calgary garden. Calgary Gardens are all about the seasons and Gardeners in Calgary should make the most out of each season.

Calgary Gardeners are a passionate breed of people.

Due to the quick blast of spring summer and fall, we only have a small amount of time to enjoy our gardens in Calgary. Because of this, I like to make the most out of the gardening season.

Calgary is know more long, but mild winters, so one should pay attention to the ambitions and plan for your garden. Reflection is what winter time is for.

Spring is a time to enjoy your Calgary Garden.

The warm smell of lilacs permeating many Calgary Gardens on a nice spring day is what I look forward to every year. A passing bee loves to stop from flower to flower collecting nectar from a favorite Calgary garden.

Color and life thrive in the mini ecosystem a Calgary Gardener will accomplish, with just a few garden plants.

Your pets suddenly have more energy as you let them outside to play around the garden, on a warm spring day in Calgary.

Oh yes, spring. It is a wonderful thing.

Maybe winter was invented so that Calgary Gardeners may have time to think about what they are going to do next summer in their garden.

The Gardening season in Calgary is usually about half the year. When winter finally takes her icy grasp, gardeners have taken accustom to a weather pattern called a Chinook.

Chinooks are good in the sense they save the people of Calgary really cold winters, but they are bad for Calgary Gardens. Plants in a typical Calgary Garden will get tricked into thinking that it is summer before being hit by really cold spells. This can be no good for plants in any Calgary Garden.

Calgary Chinooks pose another problem for gardens. The wind. Due to the pressure variance associated with Calgary Chinooks, high winds can dry out plants in your gardens.

One plant that is local to the Calgary area and particularily vulnerable is the cedar. This can be fixed by wrapping it in burlap.

Once all the precautions are taken and winter has had her time spring comes. That is our time to enjoy.

Color bursts from the newly formed foliaged from Calgary Garden Perennials.

Trees and shrubs that have stood cold all winter, get to breath fresh air and bask in a typical Calgary sunny day.

As a Calgary Gardener, I have learned like all seasons. This includes Winter and the so called dreaded Chinook.

We must all celebrate and enjoy the off season so that we can get back to the basics and have fun designing the Calgary Garden space for the next coming season.

Or maybe if it is winter, get some indoor plants and create an indoor Calgary Garden!

Good luck with your offseason efforts!
